"A child without education is like a bird without wings"
- Tibetan Proverb
Rural Scholars initiative operates within our "Research & Education" pillar and includes several programs focused on education and learning around the world.
At its core, education is a fundamental human right.
Yet for millions of children living in rural areas, geography acts as a socioeconomic filter - separating those who can access opportunity from those trapped in generational poverty. Roughly half of the global population lives in rural communities, with Africa and Asia accounting for 90% of that total. For these students, poverty and underfunded local infrastructure are only half the battle. The ultimate barrier is often pure physical distance. For over a decade, Inventions For Good has treated this systemic breakdown not just as a social issue, but as a design challenge.
How do we build a bridge over the vast distances isolating rural students from a quality education?
Launched originally as TERuSA (Transforming Education in Rural South Africa) and managed by Inventions For Good since 2014, the Access Education program began by inviting children of the farming families in Roodekrans, South Africa, into an immersive educational ecosystem. By partnering with the University of Johannesburg School of Education, we ensured our program development was research-informed, moving past guesswork and trial-and-error.
Solving rural school access required an evolutionary approach to logistics:
Day Student Model
Initially, we provided daily transportation. However, due to the remote nature of the farms, students still had to walk 2.5 miles on rugged dirt roads just to reach a paved pickup point. The resulting commute was a grueling 3 hours each way - an unsustainable burden for young learners.
Systemic Redesign
To protect our students' well-being and time, we pivoted to a weekly residential model. Students are safely transported to school on Sunday evenings and return home to their families on Friday afternoons.
Beyond the Classroom
This residential model unlocked unexpected compounding benefits. By living at the schools during the week, our scholars gained access to consistent, enhanced nutrition, dedicated study hours, and enriching extracurricular activities.
The Real Cost of Rural Isolation
In standard education philanthropy, tuition is the primary focus. But in rural landscapes, infrastructure is the real barrier. Historically, for our day students, tuition accounted for around 35% of the total expenditure per child. The remaining 50% is entirely driven by geography (specialized transportation and boarding logistics). This data proves that without active, structured intervention to bridge the physical gap, quality education remains fundamentally out of reach for interior farming communities.
Tailored Pathways & Collaborative Groundwork
We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all education. Our scholars attend diverse, high-quality institutions tailored specifically to their unique strengths, passions, and career interests. For example, our current cohorts include students immersed at Hoërskool Bekker Secondary (focusing on agricultural science) and the Rustenburg Educational College (focusing on English language mastery).

Our On-the-Ground Partner
Systemic change requires local trust. In South Africa, the Rural Scholars program operates hand-in-hand with Investing for Innovation, a dedicated non-profit organization based in Johannesburg. Their deep, daily engagement with our students, their families, and the school administrators is the heartbeat that makes this program thrive.
Program Budget
In 2026 Access Education program operates three distinct funding models to support students. Being nimble allows us to adapt support based on student's need, location, and the structural constraints of our partner organizations.
IFG covering 100% of tuition and boarding for rural students; because it includes boarding and significant transportation costs, it has the highest average annual cost per student.
IFG covers about 65% of tuition; its expenses are concentrated most heavily in tuition, with smaller amounts for uniforms, supplies, transportation, and administration.
Supports high school students primarily through tuition assistance, with additional costs for transportation, uniforms, supplies, and administration.
The total budget for Access Education Program in 2026 is $50,074 for 14 students, which is approximately $3,577 per student. This includes tuition; room and board during the week; transportation to the schools on Sunday evenings and back home on Friday afternoons; and other education-related expenses. In the last few years, the tuition costs (and various associated fees) have dramatically increased. Given the global economic and political volatility, we anticipate this trend to continue.
Why Sponsor a Scholar?
In rural communities, talent is everywhere, but opportunity is miles away. When you fund a Rural Scholar, you aren’t just paying for tuition - you are directly funding the logistics, safety, and infrastructure required to rewrite a child’s future.
Our data shows that 50% of the cost to educate a rural student goes directly toward overcoming geographic isolation through secure boarding and weekend transportation. Your sponsorship dismantles this physical barrier, giving an exceptional student the consistency, nutrition, and world-class education they deserve.
Many rural communities across South Africa face steep systemic barriers to providing advanced educational opportunities. Located near the borders of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Hanyani Combined High School in Tshipise Sagole, Limpopo Province, serves an incredibly isolated student body. When we learned that these high school students were barred from enrolling in upper-level mathematics and science tracks simply due to a lack of "basic" supplies, Inventions For Good stepped in to bridge the gap. In 2023, we equipped every enrolled student at the school with a scientific calculator - knocking down a small but key barrier to advanced academic pursuit.
Recognizing that comprehensive empowerment requires a deep ecosystem of support, our work builds upon a vital network of regional collaboration. Most pupils at Hanyani hail from the neighboring village of Matatani, which has been newly energized by a University of Johannesburg solar installation project. Furthermore, in partnership with the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), the school has since established a dedicated learning center featuring a library and a six-computer digital lab. While critical infrastructure gaps remain - such as a current lack of recreational and sports facilities - this growing node of educational resources provides these brilliant young minds with the essential scaffolding to, in time, shape their own futures.
More Help is Needed!
By equipping isolated schools with essential technology, we clear some of the systemic hurdles that keep brilliant young minds grounded. Your support helps us expand this vital educational scaffolding to more communities.

Founded in January 2002 under the auspices of the Roodepoort Child and Family Welfare Society, St. Laurence’s Children’s Haven House serves as a vital sanctuary just west of Johannesburg. The home is dedicated to providing abused, neglected, and abandoned children with a secure, loving, and nurturing environment. Operating entirely on a voluntary administrative and fundraising basis, the organization ensures that 100% of all incoming resources directly benefit the children in their care.
To help these resilient young people build a pathway toward a self-sufficient future, Inventions For Good stepped in to anchor their educational journeys. We provide comprehensive academic underwriting - covering essential school uniforms, vital educational supplies, and full tuition costs. By removing these financial and institutional barriers to entry, we ensure that children at Haven House have the stability and tools required to thrive socially, excel academically, and unlock their full human potential.
